Wet food is how cats drink

Cats evolved in deserts and get most of their water from prey, not from a bowl. A cat fed only dry food runs at a mild water deficit for life, which is why wet food matters more for cats than it does for dogs. Hydration is the point

Wet food is roughly 75% water against 10% in kibble. That difference is the single most effective thing you can do for a cat's urinary and kidney health.

Texture is a real preference

Cats form texture preferences young and hold them for life. Mousse, gravy, jelly, chunks and loaf are not interchangeable — if a cat refuses one, try a different texture before giving up on the brand.

Complete or complementary

Complete foods are nutritionally balanced and can be fed alone. Complementary foods and most gravies are toppers. Feeding only complementary food long-term causes deficiencies.

Do not leave it out

Wet food spoils within an hour or two in Hyderabad heat. Serve what your cat will finish, refrigerate the rest, and bring it to room temperature before serving — cold food is often refused.

A few things worth knowing

One wet meal a day is enough to matter. You do not have to switch entirely. Adding a single pouch or tin alongside dry food raises daily water intake measurably and is what most vets actually recommend.

Kittens need kitten formulas. Growth demands more protein, fat and calcium per gram than adult maintenance. Feed kitten wet food until 12 months, then transition.

Fish every day is not ideal. Cats love it, but a fish-only diet is associated with thiamine issues and can be high in heavy metals. Rotate fish with chicken and other proteins.

Prescription wet diets exist for a reason. Renal and urinary wet formulas combine therapeutic nutrition with high moisture, which is exactly what a cat with kidney or bladder disease needs. Use under veterinary direction.

Common questions

How much wet food does a cat need per day?

An average 4kg adult cat needs roughly 200 to 250 grams of wet food daily if fed exclusively on it. Most owners feed one pouch alongside dry food instead, which is a reasonable middle ground.

Is wet food better than dry food?

For hydration, clearly yes. For dental wear, convenience and cost per meal, dry food wins. Feeding both is the practical answer for most Hyderabad households.

My cat won't eat wet food. What now?

Try a different texture rather than a different flavour — a cat who refuses mousse will often take jelly or chunks. Serving at room temperature rather than fridge-cold makes a large difference too.

Can I leave wet food out all day?

No. In Hyderabad temperatures it spoils within an hour or two and attracts ants and flies. Serve small portions and refrigerate the remainder in a covered container for up to 24 hours.

Does wet food cause dental problems?

It contributes less to mechanical cleaning than kibble, but dental disease is driven mostly by genetics and plaque, not food texture. Brushing and dental treats matter more than which food you choose.

Gravy, jelly or mousse — what's the difference?

Gravy and jelly are usually chunks in liquid, mousse is a smooth pate, and loaf is firmer. Mousse suits kittens and seniors with dental issues; adult cats often prefer chunks in gravy.
