Kittens grow fast and need food made for growth, in small, soft meals through the day. This page lists dry and wet kitten food from Royal Canin, Drools, Kitty Yums, Carniwel and other brands, along with the Smylo range. Kitten food

Kittens need roughly twice the calories per kilo that an adult cat does, and they need them in small, frequent meals. This page holds 108 foods, wet and dry. Most are made for kittens; a few adult and all-ages foods are listed too.

Weaning to twelve months

Start with a weaning or babycat formula to around four months, then a standard kitten food to twelve. Large-framed cats can stay on kitten food a little longer; most should move to adult food at a year.

Feed little and often

A kitten's stomach is small and its energy demand is high. Four meals a day to six months, then three, then two. Free-feeding dry food alongside scheduled wet meals works well for most households.

Wet food from the start

Establishing wet food early makes life much easier later, because a cat raised on dry alone often refuses wet as an adult. It also builds the water intake habit that protects the urinary tract for years.

Change food slowly

Transition over seven to ten days. Kittens rehomed at eight or nine weeks are already dealing with a great deal, and an abrupt diet change on top of it is the usual cause of the first bout of loose stools.

Common questions

When should a kitten move to adult food?

At around twelve months for most cats. Use a weaning or babycat formula to roughly four months first, then a kitten formula. Moving too early costs the kitten calories during the period it is still building frame and muscle.

Wet or dry for a kitten?

Both, and it is worth establishing wet food early. A cat raised on dry food alone frequently refuses wet food as an adult, which removes your easiest option if it ever develops a urinary problem.

How much should I feed?

Follow the pack guideline for the kitten's age and expected adult weight, split across several meals, then adjust on how the kitten looks and feels. Ribs should be findable under a light covering but not visible.

Can kittens drink cow's milk?

No. Most kittens past weaning lack the lactase to digest it and it commonly causes diarrhoea. If you want to give milk, use a kitten milk replacer formulated for cats.
