Treats, chews and training rewards

Treats do three different jobs — training, dental care and plain affection — and the best treat for one is usually wrong for the others. We stock 53 treats and chews for dogs and cats, from soft training bites to long-lasting yak chews, delivered anywhere in Hyderabad the same day.

Training needs small and soft

A training treat should be swallowed in a second so focus is not broken. Pea-sized, soft, high-value. Biscuits and chews are the wrong tool — by the time they finish chewing, the moment has passed.

Chews are for occupation

Yak cheese bars, bully sticks and antlers keep a dog busy for an hour and satisfy the urge to chew. Give them when you need the dog settled, not as a reward for a command.

The 10% rule

Treats should stay under a tenth of daily calories. Most overweight dogs in Hyderabad are overweight from treats and table scraps, not from their meals.

Supervise hard chews

Antlers, hooves and bones can fracture teeth, and any chew worn down to a swallowable stub becomes a choking risk. Take it away before it gets that small.

A few things worth knowing

Dental treats do work, within limits. Products with a proven abrasive texture reduce plaque measurably. They do not replace brushing, and they cannot fix existing tartar — that needs a scaling under anaesthesia.

Rawhide deserves caution. It swells in the stomach and is a common cause of obstruction in enthusiastic chewers. Yak cheese, dried fish and vegetable-based chews carry far less risk.

Check the protein if your pet has allergies. Chicken is the most common food allergen in Indian dogs and it is in most treats. If you are running an elimination diet, treats break it as easily as meals do.

Common questions

How many treats a day is too many?

More than a tenth of daily calories. For a 10kg dog that is roughly 50 calories, which is far less than most owners assume — often three or four small biscuits.

What treats are best for puppy training?

Soft, small, strongly smelling and quick to eat. Freeze-dried meat or soft chicken strips broken into pea-sized pieces work better than anything crunchy.

Are yak chews safe?

Generally yes, and they last well. Take the chew away once it is small enough to swallow whole, or microwave the stub for a few seconds to puff it into a safe, brittle treat.

Can I give my dog biscuits meant for humans?

No. Human biscuits are high in sugar and salt, and some contain xylitol, which is severely toxic to dogs even in small amounts.

Do treats cause diarrhoea?

New treats given in quantity often do. Introduce one new treat at a time, in small amounts, especially with rich or fatty chews.

My cat only wants treats and won't eat meals. What now?

Stop the treats entirely for a few days. Cats hold out longer than owners do, but a cat that genuinely refuses food for more than 24 hours needs a vet — hepatic lipidosis develops fast in cats that stop eating.
