Is dog flea medicine safe for cats?
No. Never use a dog tick or flea treatment on your cat. Some contain permethrin, which a cat's body can't break down, and even a small amount can cause shaking, seizures or death. Only use products that say "for cats" on the pack. If you've already used a dog product, see a vet straight away.

Why dog products are dangerous for cats
Some dog spot-ons contain permethrin at a very high strength, hundreds of times stronger than the cat versions. A cat's liver can't break permethrin down the way a dog's liver can, so using "just a little" of the dog product doesn't make it safe.
The results can be severe. In one set of reports on cats exposed to these products, about a quarter of the cats died, and more than half had tremors. Even one drop, or licking an empty packet, can be enough, and young cats were most of the cases.
Some cheap anti-tick dog shampoos and dips contain similar chemicals too. A shampoo labelled for dogs is for dogs only, wherever it sits on the shelf.
Most of the shelf is made for dogs
Most tick and flea products in our own shop are made for dogs, and the dog ones are often cheaper. That's how accidents happen: an owner with an itchy cat late at night picks up the cheaper dog product and uses a bit less of it. Please don't.
Your cat can be poisoned through your dog
You don't have to treat your cat for it to be poisoned. Cats can pick it up by grooming a dog, or sleeping next to one, after the dog has been treated.
If your dog and cat share a room, keep them apart after treating the dog until the treated spot is completely dry, and give it longer than you think. Or choose a dog product that isn't permethrin-based. The fipronil and fluralaner products on our dog shelf aren't in this group.
Safe tick and flea treatments for cats

- Wider protection: Savavet Selaforte at Rs 552 also treats ear mites and some worms. Zoetis Revolution for Cats at Rs 2,472 is three months' supply and covers fleas, ticks, ear mites and several kinds of worm.
- If you tend to forget: Bravecto spot-on for cats, from Rs 1,584, lasts up to three months. Choose the size for your cat's weight.
- Check first: a flea comb at Rs 405 shows whether your cat actually has fleas. Look for black specks that turn reddish on damp white tissue. That's flea dirt.
Treat your home too
Most fleas aren't on your cat. The eggs and young fleas live in bedding, sofas, carpets and under furniture, which is why treatment can seem to fail a few weeks later.
- Treat every pet in the house on the same day. Cats and dogs carry the same flea.
- Keep treating on schedule, even after the scratching stops.
- Vacuum well, especially along room edges and under furniture, and wash bedding in hot water.
If you've used a dog product on your cat
Act now, rather than reading on.
- Wash it off with warm water and a little mild dish soap.
- Call a vet while you're doing it.
- Don't wait for symptoms. They can take up to three days to appear.
- Take the product packet to the vet.
Watch for drooling, wobbling, wide pupils, twitching, shaking, seizures or trouble breathing. Cats treated quickly usually recover fully.
The research behind this
Strength. Australia's Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority found that products registered for cats "contain low concentrations of permethrin (0.05 to 0.1%) and are suitable for cats if used according to label directions", while dog spot-ons contain 45 to 65%. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center recorded the same range for dog products: "These products contain high concentrations (45-65%) of permethrin insecticide".
Why cats can't clear it. The Australian review explains that "the feline liver is deficient in the glucuronide transferase enzyme", which is part of how permethrin is broken down.
What happened to the cats. The Australian authority reviewed its reports of permethrin poisoning in cats.

The three figures describe the same 26 cats and overlap, so they don't add up to 100. In 22 of the 26 reports the owner had put a dog product on the cat, and about a quarter of the cats were exposed through a recently treated dog. Almost two-thirds were a year old or younger. The paper notes that "even exposure to very small amounts of these products, such as one drop from an ampoule or licking an empty permethrin product packet, may be lethal to some cats." Twenty-six reports is a small number, and it says nothing about how often this happens in India, where nobody collects this data.
Contact with dogs. The PDSA says poisoning "is most common when a dog flea treatment is put on a cat by accident, but can also happen if a cat comes into contact with permethrin on a dog, for example when grooming or sharing a bed."
Other chemicals. The European parasite guideline, ESCCAP, warns that "highly concentrated synthetic pyrethroids or amidines (if registered for dogs only) are toxic for cats." Cypermethrin, used in many cheap anti-tick dog shampoos, is a synthetic pyrethroid, and amitraz, used in tick dips, is an amidine.
Fleas in the home. ESCCAP: "Only the adult stages are found on the host with eggs and immature stages being found in the environment." Development from egg to adult "can be as fast as 14 days or may extend to 140 days". The cat flea, *Ctenocephalides felis felis*, is the same species on cats and dogs.
Emergency care. The PDSA advises: "wash it off immediately using warm water and dilute washing up liquid (if they will allow you to) and call your vet straight away." The PDSA says signs usually appear within a few hours and can take up to 36; both veterinary papers say they can be delayed up to 72 hours.
