A Shih Tzu being examined by a vet on a clinic table

A customer came into our Gachibowli store a few weeks ago with a 7-week-old Golden Retriever puppy she'd just brought home. She was excited, a little sleep-deprived, and completely overwhelmed about where to even start with vaccinations. She'd heard a figure thrown around by someone at her apartment complex and wasn't sure if it was accurate. That conversation is what prompted us to write this. Dog vaccination costs in India vary more than most people expect, and without a clear picture, you can either underprepend or get surprised at the vet counter.

This guide covers what vaccines your dog actually needs, what each one costs in India right now, and how to structure a schedule that makes sense. We'll keep it practical and skip the fluff.

Why Dog Vaccinations Are Non-Negotiable

Here's the honest truth: Hyderabad is not a low-risk city for unvaccinated dogs. Between the street dog population, the monsoon season bringing out all kinds of infections, and the density of apartment complexes where dogs interact daily in lifts and lobbies, the exposure risk is real. Parvovirus especially — we've seen too many heartbroken families who lost puppies to it because the second or third dose got delayed by just a few weeks.

Vaccines work by introducing your dog's immune system to a weakened or inactive form of a pathogen. The body learns to recognize it, builds a response, and is ready if the real thing shows up later. Without that preparation, diseases like distemper and rabies can progress very fast — and treatment costs for these illnesses dwarf what vaccination would have cost by a factor of ten or more.

There's also the social angle. Most good boarding facilities, dog parks, and even our own pet boarding service require up-to-date vaccination records before we accept a dog. It protects every animal in the space, not just yours.

Core vs Non-Core Vaccines — What's the Difference?

Not every vaccine is mandatory for every dog. Vets in India categorize them into two groups. Core vaccines are recommended for all dogs regardless of lifestyle, because the diseases they prevent are either highly contagious, potentially fatal, or transmissible to humans. Non-core vaccines depend on your dog's specific exposure risk — where you live, whether they go to boarding, whether they spend time outdoors in wooded or water-heavy areas.

If your dog is an apartment dog in Gachibowli who mostly walks around Inorbit mall on weekends, their risk profile is different from a farm dog in the outskirts of the city. Your vet should be the one deciding the non-core list. What we're covering here are the ones nearly every Indian pet parent will encounter.

Breaking Down Dog Vaccination Costs in India

Rabies Vaccine

This is the one that's actually mandated by law in India, and for good reason. Rabies is fatal once symptoms appear — there is no treatment stage. The virus spreads through the bite of an infected animal, attacks the nervous system, and is transmissible to humans. In a city where stray dogs are part of the daily landscape, your dog's rabies vaccination is protecting your whole household, not just the dog.

The vaccine is typically given at around 12 to 16 weeks of age, then repeated annually. Cost in India ranges from Rs 350 to Rs 500 per dose depending on the clinic and brand used.

DHPP Combination Vaccine

This single injection covers four diseases at once: Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, and Parvovirus. It's commonly called the DHPP or the 5-in-1, and it's the backbone of puppy vaccination schedules across India.

Distemper attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems. Parvovirus causes severe vomiting and bloody diarrhea — puppies can dehydrate and crash within 48 hours. Both are airborne or spread through contact with infected feces, which is why puppies in apartment buildings with shared staircases are genuinely at risk even before their first outdoor walk.

The DHPP series starts at 6 to 8 weeks of age, with doses every 3 to 4 weeks until the puppy is about 16 weeks old. After that, a booster at one year, then every 1 to 3 years based on your vet's protocol. Each dose costs approximately Rs 700 to Rs 1,200.

Leptospirosis Vaccine

This one is technically non-core globally, but in India — especially during Hyderabad's monsoon season — we'd argue most dogs here should get it. Leptospirosis spreads through contaminated water and soil, and after a good Hyderabad downpour, puddles and waterlogged areas become risk zones. Dogs who splash through these or sniff around drains are exposed. The disease can cause severe kidney and liver damage and is also transmissible to humans.

Cost is approximately Rs 400 to Rs 700 per dose, given initially as two doses four weeks apart, then annually.

Kennel Cough (Bordetella)

If your dog goes to boarding, dog parks, or grooming sessions, this one matters. Kennel cough spreads rapidly in any space where dogs share air. The vaccine is given as nasal drops or an injection, and most reputable boarding facilities — including ours — strongly recommend it. Cost runs from Rs 500 to Rs 900.

What Does the Full Puppy Vaccination Schedule Cost?

Let's put this into real numbers. For a puppy going through the standard schedule in Hyderabad, expect to spend somewhere between Rs 3,500 and Rs 6,500 across the first year, including all DHPP doses, rabies, and a consultation fee at each visit. Clinics in areas like Gachibowli, Kondapur, and Jubilee Hills tend to charge toward the upper end of that range. Smaller clinics in other parts of the city can be more affordable, but always check whether the vaccines are from reputable cold-chain-maintained sources — that matters more than the price difference.

After the first year, annual booster costs are more manageable — typically Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,500 per year covering rabies and a combination booster.

Is There Anything You Can Do at Home Between Vet Visits?

Vaccines are one pillar of preventive care, but they work best alongside good day-to-day health habits. Keeping your dog well-nourished, properly hydrated, and mentally stimulated reduces stress on the immune system. A good feeding setup that encourages consistent meal routines matters more than people think. We also strongly recommend keeping your dog's living space clean — tick and flea prevention is especially important in Hyderabad's humid climate and does a lot of heavy lifting between vet appointments.

Should You Go to a Corporate Vet Clinic or an Independent Vet?

Honestly, both can work well. The bigger clinic chains tend to have more consistent records, reminder systems, and sometimes in-house specialists. Independent vets who've been in the same Hyderabad neighborhood for years often have a more personal relationship with your dog and may be quicker to notice subtle changes visit to visit. What we'd recommend: look for someone who takes time to explain the schedule rather than just administering and sending you home. A good vet will tell you what was given, what's due next, and why. If they can't answer your questions, find someone who can. Our vet clinic at the Gachibowli shop is not running at the moment, so please ask your own vet about vaccinations and their cost.

Common Mistakes Pet Parents Make With Dog Vaccinations

The most common one we see: delaying the booster because the dog seems healthy. Vaccines don't just treat illness — they prevent it, and immunity from earlier doses does wane. Missing an annual booster by several months can leave your dog genuinely vulnerable during that gap. The second mistake is assuming that because the dog stays mostly indoors, they don't need all vaccines. Viruses like parvovirus can come in on your shoes. Your dog doesn't have to step outside to be exposed.

A third one worth mentioning: not keeping records. Every time your dog is vaccinated, get a written record with the date, vaccine brand, and batch number. Boarding facilities, airlines, and some parks will ask for this. Keep it somewhere you won't lose it.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age should I start vaccinating my puppy in India?

Most vets in India start the DHPP series at 6 to 8 weeks of age. Before that first dose, your puppy should stay away from unknown dogs and public spaces. The rabies vaccine is typically given at 12 to 16 weeks. Don't wait too long to begin — the early weeks are when puppies are most vulnerable.

Are dog vaccinations mandatory in India?

The rabies vaccine is legally required in India. The others — DHPP, leptospirosis, kennel cough — are strongly recommended by veterinary associations and required by most boarding and daycare facilities, but not mandated by law. That said, skipping core vaccines is a risk we genuinely wouldn't take.

Can I vaccinate my dog at home to save money?

Some vaccines are available at pet stores, but we'd advise against self-administration if you haven't been trained to do it properly. Vaccines need to be stored at precise temperatures, administered correctly, and recorded properly. An improperly stored or administered vaccine may not provide any immunity at all, which defeats the entire purpose. The vet consultation fee is worth it.

My dog missed a booster by 3 months. Do they need to restart the whole schedule?

Not necessarily. In most cases, a vet will give the overdue booster and reset the annual cycle from that point. If a puppy's primary series was interrupted significantly, the vet may recommend restarting that series. Always check with your vet rather than assuming — the answer depends on how long the gap was and which vaccine was missed.
