How big is big enough
The usual advice is a box about one and a half times your cat's length, measured from the nose to the base of the tail. For a typical short-haired Indian cat, that works out to roughly 68cm.
In the study that made "bigger is better" standard advice, cats used a very large box far more often than a smaller one. That large box was longer than any litter tray we could find for sale in India.
What's on the shelf, and the cheaper option
The longest tray we stock is the Savic Rincon corner tray at Rs 1,349. Its triangle shape tucks neatly into a bathroom corner. The Trixie Brisko at Rs 830 is a good open tray, with a rim that stops most of the scatter.
Both are good trays, and both are smaller than the box the research used. If your cat is large, or you have a problem you haven't been able to fix, try a big plastic storage box or under-bed box from a hardware shop instead. Cut one side down so an older cat can step in easily. It costs less than our trays, and you'll know within a couple of weeks whether it helped.
Covered or open?
Most cats don't mind either way. In one study, most cats showed no preference between a covered and an open box, as long as the boxes were big and scooped daily.
The catch is cleaning. A covered box left for a couple of days in the monsoon smells, and cats avoid it. Size and daily scooping matter more than the lid.
Choosing litter
If your cat is happily using the box, the litter isn't the problem, so you can buy on price.
Plain, unscented clumping clay litter is the safest choice. We keep Petcrux Eco Clump at Rs 828 for three large bags. In one small study, cats chose clay litter far more often than tofu or other eco litters.
If you'd like to try tofu litter, the Fofos tofu blend at Rs 799 is flushable. Keep the bag sealed during the monsoon, because tofu litter soaks up damp from the air and goes soft.
Switching litter? Don't swap it all at once. Put the old and new litter in two boxes side by side for two weeks, and see which one your cat uses.
A simple routine

The research behind this
Box size. The study behind the "bigger is better" advice is Guy, Hopson and Vanderstichel, Journal of Veterinary Behavior, 2014. It ran for four weeks across 74 cats, each home given two boxes of different sizes. The large box was 86cm long, and over the study it was used 5,031 times against 3,239 for the smaller one. We could not get past the paper's paywall, so these figures come from a secondary write-up rather than the paper itself. The longest tray we stock measures 58cm. The 68cm figure above is our own estimate, based on a short-haired cat of about 45cm from nose to tail base.
Covered or open. In a study of 27 cats each given a covered and an uncovered box, "Four cats (15%) preferred the covered litter box and four cats (15%) preferred the uncovered box. The rest of the cats (70%) didn't care." Both boxes were large modified storage tubs, 82.5 by 50.2 by 47.3cm, so the study compared lids while keeping size generous. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior summarises that "the majority of cats did not show a strong preference for either a covered or uncovered box".
Litter. One household in Baltimore put seven litters out side by side for thirteen days and recorded every use.
